A Guide to Tank Ammo | Koala Explains: Tank Ammunition Types and their Differences

Tanks have come a long way since their debut in the first world war, and as the vehicles have gotten more advanced, so too have the ammunition types available to them. In this episode of Koala Explains, we’ll go over briefly each type of ammunition used, from solid AP slugs, to tandem shaped charge warheads and fin stabilised sabot rounds.

Re: smooth bore barrels. While I understand that smooth bore is necessary for modern fin stabilized ammo doesnt it reduce the effectiveness of HE ammo which each tank still wants to be able to deliver?

i advise people to look at to look up armor penetration simulation as it shows how the shell penetrates armor, for example how capped and non-capped projectiles perform against angled armor

What i understood from this and war thunder:
AP tipes: makes a hole and sometime explodes in the tank
APHE and HEAT: explosive injection for the enemy
    HE: Just explodes
    APFSDS: a fukcing arrow
APDS: that little kid that brokes your balls
Shrapnel: launch some iron balls in the tank.
HESH: wants to gift you some shockwave

Russian tank ammo is incredible. It’s so efficient. No need to waste time firing the rounds; they just blow up the Russian tank they are already stored in.

proximnity fuse was awesome its like a mini radar made strong enough to survive being fired with like vacum tubes. they had to make sure it didn’t activate during travel so the switch to start it activates when they were spun reely fast from the rifeling. these fuses were also used in artilery to make airbust rounds as the radar can bounce off the ground too not just planes, so they didn’t need to do the math to make timers work for airburst.

I know he has a water mark on his video, but you also could have actually taken the time to credit the minute historians video when you used his visuals. A simple text over the video like "Credit too Minute Historian". Otherwise I really enjoyed this video. Well explained and thought out. It’s clear you spent a lot of time and effort to research the rounds.

10:03 unless you’re the french working on the AMX-30, then you spend a bunch of money to put ball-bearings in your HEAT rounds to make the case spin from the rifling while the explosive inside remains static. Wack

I wonder if some boozed-up engineer cooked up a HESH shell that self-rotates to work with smooth-bore guns.

  37. Amppari_234 on February 26, 2023 at 2:46 am

There’s one more variant of AP rounds, ones made of depleted uranium. It had a self sharpening effect unlike other metals that would become blunt as they hit the armor.

capped ap actually can not make the ammo
turns to the normal of sloped armor,it just reduce the angle that it turns against the normal of sloped armor while penetrating compared with ap. Otherwise will the sloped armor be less effective than armor that have the same horizontal thickness, is that true? Look at those soviet IS heavy tanks.

Just wait for railguns. Steel rod with wolframium tip, dart-shaped, purely kinetical penetration, even of sloped armor.
And then someone invents magnetic deflectors.
