Alberta won’t support Canada’s efforts to seize prohibited weapons, minister says

The Alberta government is taking steps to oppose Canada’s firearm buyback program which includes potential seizure of thousands of assault-style weapons.

Since May 2020, Ottawa has prohibited more than 1,500 different models of assault-style firearms from being used or sold in Canada. It has committed to establishing a buyback program to remove those firearms from communities.

But Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandro says the government is “fearmongering” by labelling guns as “assault-style,” which he said is a move to scare Canadians unfamiliar with firearms.

Jill Croteau has more on the province’s protest and the steps it is taking to keep guns in the hands of Albertans.

Funny how gun owners call themselves law abiding citizens but will disregard a law when it is one that effects them. Not very law abiding.

  2. Combo Smooth on January 30, 2023 at 1:35 am

I fail to understand what is so bad about trying to get rid of assault weapons. It’s definitely a political move that sounds more based on American politics than our own, but why does anyone need an assault rifle?

  3. chad mcleod on January 30, 2023 at 1:36 am

I am not a gun owner but I do support the gun owners. I feel better when my neighbor has one. We need to go after criminals not create criminals. Go Alberta go!!.

I think saying that they’re coming for our cars next year might be a bit of a stretch.

easy solution cut ALL federal funding to alberta and impose daily fines against them. Send the RCMP in to arrest all police who wont enforce the law

Tobacco use is the number 1 cause of preventable disease and death in Canada and causes 45,000 Canadian deaths each year. Smoking causes about 30% of cancer deaths in Canada and about 85% of lung cancer deaths. In 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer and 21,100 died of the disease. Tobacco is 4 500 000 000 percent worse than guns? But Hey Guns are just the worst thing in Canada right? What happened to priorities. The Federal Government is broken. Alberta hold fast.

Legal guns has nothing to do with the rampant crime rates. There should be laws to help the regular citizen defend themselves. BC random attacks have become out of hand in the last year.

    No, it’s not.

These politicians are in the pockets of foreign delegates so they won’t think twice to sellout their country heritage.

  11. Wes Swainson on January 30, 2023 at 1:44 am

Most law abiding gun owners want the AR15 style rifle off the market. They want this style of gun gone. We don’t say anything because we are harassed by bots until hell freezes over.

History and statistics are a weakness in the minds of Canadians who support gun confiscation agendas.

Just think half the people are below average intelligence by definition, and all you need as a politician in a first past the post popular democracy is about 30% of the vote if it is relatively evenly distributed over most of the country. You can get elected by stupid people alone, by selling lies and misinformation, promoting division, and unfounded fear.

In the United States there are 450 million guns owned by private citizens, if owning guns were a problem you would certainly know about it.

  23. GrandAdmiral Zod on January 30, 2023 at 2:04 am

I’m 100% sure when I lose my handguns to Trudeau all the criminals will give up theirs.

Just like I know paying more taxes solves climate change.

I also know that large fake prosthetic breasts with giant nipples prevents homophobia in schools.

    It all makes sense.

Wokeness is a mind virus..it is arguably one of the biggest threats to modern civilization. At its heart, wokeness is divisive, exclusionary, and hateful. It basically gives mean people a shield to be cruel, armored in false virtue. – Elon Musk

Where did you find a stalinist supporter in Alberta. Downtown Edmonton in an NDP office I bet!

  29. IntegralLens on January 30, 2023 at 2:10 am

First you have to prove that there is some linkage between legal gun ownership and crime. Then you have to explain why you are the ones changing a rule to turn perfectly good law abiding citizens, into criminals over night.

  30. Ted Kaczynski on January 30, 2023 at 2:10 am

the funniest thing is that trudeau banned ARs because someone committed a shooting with a police issue rifle, which was ALREADY ILLEGAL IN CANADA FOR ANYONE OTHER THAN LAW ENFORCEMENT OR GOVERNMENT

  31. belltocher on January 30, 2023 at 2:11 am

If you don’t know anything about guns you have to realize that assault rifle is not a type of gun any more than hot rod is a make and model of car

  32. Pyro OneExSeven on January 30, 2023 at 2:11 am

Okay , Fair enough , don’t help , just do the rest of Canada a favor and keep all your prohibited weapons in Alberta , …

  33. Nessuno on January 30, 2023 at 2:12 am

The legislation bans the reselling of hand guns. No one hunts with a hand gun. And no, the feds aren’t coming after your mobile home Jethro.

  35. Taylor Teefive on January 30, 2023 at 2:12 am

He said that most ALbertans wants the confiscation of guns….how does he know that???

  36. belltocher on January 30, 2023 at 2:14 am

Over and over again I’ve heard Trudeau and his people talk about how there’s no place for assault weapons in this country. They don’t think that he has no intention of taking this type of gun away from his bodyguards or any of the government officials that have them they say that this stuff belongs on a battlefield not on a city street but they just mind regular people having them. The freedom Convoy scared the crap out of Trudeau and his minions. The ruling class does not want the peasants to be able to stand up for themselves plain and simple.

  37. SlurpEee25 on January 30, 2023 at 2:15 am

There is no such thing as an "assault style" rifle and legal gun owners are not the problem.

  46. Craving Glory on January 30, 2023 at 2:26 am

Every Liberal supporter should remember this very clearly. Eventually the Conservatives will be in power once again. If they chose to act in the same unilateral way to enact laws that you feel infringe on rights and freedoms yet they support the personal interests of the people that support the Dems, will you cry "unfair" and expect those people to focus on our proper democratic process instead of their own personal interests because that is what is right? If you didn’t oppose Trudeau’s firearms bans because of the way that he enacted his legislation, why would you expect the people that did to do the right thing when your personal interests are affected in the same underhanded way?

Canadians need to focus on what is right for our democratic process, not on their own personal desires for the outcomes if they do not occur in the democratic way that we are supposed to live by.
