Having never used a two stage trigger I have a couple questions. If I’m in a mag dump situation is the first stage only engaged once and the rest of the mag will be at stage two as long as I don’t remove my finger from the trigger thereby maintaining tension?

Also, if I’m double tapping is there a noticeable “delay” in the process with the two stage trigger. Meaning would it be slowing me down in a dangerous way?

I may have to check around at some shooting ranges to see if any of them rent any two stage weapons to check it out for myself but any input that will help an old soldier out is appreciated thanks.

You’re saying that the trigger has to be held down for the disconnecter to work but how does it work when you just pull the charging handle?

  7. The Dude on November 8, 2021 at 9:23 pm

I’m just waiting for someone to invent the three stage trigger. If two is better than one, three has to be better than two.

You took the long way around to say that in a single stage trigger, you are immediately working on disengaging the sear interface, which tends to be crisper, certainly shorter travel than 2 stage. In two stage, there is a bit of travel called ‘take up’ where nothing is really happening. You are moving the trigger to the point where it can then start disengaging the sear.
A two stage trigger requires a longer trigger travel and is considered a safety feature. You have some room to pull on the trigger before you get to the disengagement point. This is why militaries tend to want two stage triggers on their main fighting rifles

Is this 2-stage trigger setup good if I wanna go “FULL, SEMI-automatic”?

  20. Stephen Maurer on November 8, 2021 at 9:38 pm

Great explanation of single and double stage triggers. I wonder with type would be best for my application explained below:

Over the past few years, I have built a bunch of AR rifles for family and friends. In all of these builds, I have used the trigger assemblies from Palmetto State Armory, Anderson and S&W. A few months ago, I built (AR-15 version) of a M16-A3 using a (surplus) Colt 20" USGI barrel and other USGI parts on a S&W MP-15 lower. I would like to use this rifle for match shooting and long distance target shooting at 200 yrd. It’s very accurate in it’s current form.

Looking at up grading my trigger?? Maybe a Geissele of this LaRue MBT trigger?? Any suggestions??

I am a revolver guy for 40 years ; JUST RETIRED and feel it is time to get into the AR-15 platform as a retirement hobby .
Your video here on the mechanics is WONDERFUL .
MY QUESTION for those out there : WHY would I want a two stage over a single stage trigger . Pros and Cons ?

  42. Kyle Ruiz on November 8, 2021 at 10:01 pm

Uhm, it seems like you could easily make a small alteration to change your gun to fully auto

  43. Simply_Based on November 8, 2021 at 10:03 pm

On the 2 stage, what is keeping the hammer from moving backward on the initial pull like it does on the single stage? Is it the front hook?

  44. Richard Stewart on November 8, 2021 at 10:04 pm

interesting but it was so hard to listen to him explain as he made it out longer than needed

  45. Gabriel Cisneros on November 8, 2021 at 10:04 pm
