Barnes TAC-XP 9mm Ammo – Excellent Self Defense Ammo – Perfect Expansion & Penetration

Barnes TAC-XP 9mm Ammo – Excellent Self Defense Ammo – Perfect Expansion & Penetration

Today I test Barnes TAC-XP bullets by shooting them into ballistic gel to check expansion and I also shoot them across my chronograph to check the velocity. Should you carry this ammo in your self defense firearm? See why I carry Barnes copper bullets for self-protection.

This is the first video I’ve seen where they performed well. Most of the other ones the didn’t penetrate but 10 inches.

    P365 is my favorite EDC.

Well now this was a interesting video and a very interesting copper bullet. I carry a sig Sauer p365 XL and have always loaded it with Hornady critical duty, but I would not mind switching to the barnes solid copper projectiles. After seeing the way that the barnes copper hollow points performed I have to admit that I was impressed.

You found a winner but lead is sweet

Very nice illustrations! I carry two calibers (actually 3). 45 acp from various 1911s and 10 shot pistols and the 5.7 x 28mm from a Ruger 57, and the 22 TCM from a RIA 5" 1911. The 9mm is by far the most common carry caliber. But I question it as being the best. But with the ammo you used, it looks to be a very capable weapon. Now with using that ammo for the 45 acp, it would be even more capable imho. I hope you can do a test with the 5.7 x 28mm and/or the 22 TMC. Those are both VERY capable rounds as well. Love all your videos that you and your son put out! Both of you are very capable shooters! Thanks!

I just bought a 9mm PCC and was looking for some hot rounds for it.
I found some Double Tap +P ammo that was using these exact bullets with a posted velocity of 1350fps. I can only imagine how that’s going to perform out of a carbine length barrel.

  8. RANDOMNATION on April 26, 2023 at 3:29 am

Yeppers yeppers, same number on the box as what I have. #32005. Well, that’s nice to know. Thank you. And cheers from Alaska. BTW, the high today (up here) was 62Β°F.

  9. ronald nunn on April 26, 2023 at 3:30 am

I should’ve continued to say I do believe the bullets you’re testing or the same. The ones you still at the beginning of the video I understand that they were made temporary I think because of some reason they had a slow down in production and made them all out of copper, and nothing coded and nickel plated shelves. I don’t want you to think that I think that you missed lead anyone. I do enjoy your video.

My new FFL store I go to regularly now put me onto Barnes Tac XPD 9mm 115 grain JHP ammo. Haven’t shot it yet as gun ranges around me only allow FMJ ammo. So I’m very interested in seeing how well the Tac-XP performs.

  11. Mike Reese on April 26, 2023 at 3:32 am

That makes me happy simce I have some of that Barnes

  12. Bodie29 on April 26, 2023 at 3:35 am

I wonder how this compares to Barnes Tac-XPD.

Those are nice carry rounds, thanks for review.

  14. JaxxzunGTL on April 26, 2023 at 3:35 am

Pretty impressive every category. I’ll probably continue running my HST’s but the short barrel performance illustrated is tempting me to throw some in a Beretta Nano. I run Precision ammo in a .380 I have, maybe I’ll try these in .380 too. Good work Sir.

Still hard to beat Glock 19 coupled with Winchester 9mm ranger 127 grain +p+….easily putting up 40sw & 45acp (not +p) energies and wound cavities

  18. marciefree on April 26, 2023 at 3:42 am

I’ve historically carried Federal HST 147 gr in my Glock 19 but after watching this I’m convinced it may not be necessary.

    truly thanks for test

  20. Mr. Scott Ursiny on April 26, 2023 at 3:43 am

With so many municipalities making lead bullets illegal, this is a great option for CONSISTENT results from a non-lead bullet. Thanks for the great videos! We always appreciate your work

  21. elsullo2 on April 26, 2023 at 3:43 am

WOW! Thank you for providing simply excellent video proof that this round does live up to its advertising! Ya can’t make this stuff up! I concur with a prior request to see a test of this in .380 caliber……………………..elsullo

    God bless all here.

  23. Samuel Morado on April 26, 2023 at 3:48 am

I saw some at a local gun range for 21.95 for 20 in 9mm. I will get some based on your findings. Thanks again. For 100 rounds that’s 1.10 per round.

  24. Rusty on April 26, 2023 at 3:49 am

Hey mixup98! Love your videos, but i have a small request. Plzzzz bring back your old intro, it was Legendary!

  25. danialphaomega on April 26, 2023 at 3:50 am

I’m glad I bought several hundred rounds of these copper tops when you were on sale πŸ˜‹ but mine have that black chrome coating.

  26. Samuel Morado on April 26, 2023 at 3:50 am

Have you tried Norma MHP for the 380. ? I’d love to see these in Gel.

I like the Sig P365 pistols and the NRA edition looks sharp. I currently carry an XDS in 45 but I’m thinking about switching to the 365 for increased capacity. Nice ammo review ! I think these rounds would serve anyone very well for defense purposes.

  36. Michael Page on April 26, 2023 at 4:07 am

Great review. I liked the puff of smoke coming out of the gel on the one shot.

  37. Elton Leong on April 26, 2023 at 4:08 am

ShootingaTheBull410’s Ammoquest series featured this same bullet. He ran the the +P version out of a SIG P938 3in barrel and averaged 1038fps while here it was 1078 from the 3.1 Sig P365. So Barnes upped the speed it looks like. This exact bullet was disqualified from the Ammoquest before moving on to the denim portion of the tests because in bare gel 1 of the bullets at 1036fps failed to completely expand and another, 1033fps, did not expand at all, overpenetrating by 1.25 in, the maximum being 18in.

    Hello in Nevada from Georgia!

  42. ronald nunn on April 26, 2023 at 4:16 am

The picture of the bullet that you showed in your hand at the beginning of the video doesn’t match the flowered out the lives you show after shooting at through water. The new replacement bullets look like that because they have a black powder coat on them but the ones you showed at the beginning are all copper on the outside and the inside.

  43. 40mmrrsmith on April 26, 2023 at 4:17 am

Reminds me of Winchester Black talon without the sharp points and the lead in the middle. I loved Black Talon ammo. After they quit making it I stopped shooting it and still have some. Thanks for posting this I think I’ll try Barnes.

  47. Southern Native on April 26, 2023 at 4:19 am

I like them too. And just so everyone knows, this is the exact same load as the Barnes tac xpd 115 grain +p
The only difference is the bullet is tinted black and the cases aren’t nickel plated.

These are some of the best self defense bullets on the market.. they laugh at heavy clothing and they expand perfectly every time .
Several companies load these bullets hotter. Corbon dpx loads use this same bullet , and Barnes also offers it as a reloading component. They bullet itself is called " xpb"

  48. Jesse Quillen on April 26, 2023 at 4:21 am

I am impressed with that ammo. Especially when shot through the denim and cloth.

Always a pleasure MIXUP, nice test , good results , take care out there . I will have to catch up on your videos , I was unable to watch from Tuesday evening until today .
My appendix ruptured Tuesday night and had to have emergency surgery , just got home after lunch today ,
I got to say it was truly an excruciatingly painful experience .
