I have some of the hangers for safe shelves and haven’t had any issues with the plastic coating on those. There must be different grades of the stuff which might be worth looking into. Great idea. Now I need to get some more pistols. 🙂

Nice job, if you want go to a home center and by the plumbing section they sell clear vinyl tubing by the foot and slide that on the steel rods.

    Kota!

  4. Lance Grooms on March 4, 2023 at 2:05 am

Made the same but covered dowels with rubber heat shrink tubes

I’d sooner fill the action with cement as use steel rods in my barrel. No matter how you polished them (which depending on the type of metal just served to work harden the steel) you’re still gonna scratch the lands and grooves of the barrel. With the barrel returning to the same position each time and the the rods always dragging the same position it will scratch the barrel. I’d suggest either a composite material or carbon fiber. It looks great though and I’m gonna try something similar sans the steel. Just my opinion though and take that for what its worth.

Why couldn’t you use brass rod? It would be easier on the boar.

  7. Victory or Valhalla on March 4, 2023 at 2:07 am

    Very nice.

  8. Cyclone Gunworks on March 4, 2023 at 2:08 am

How did you attach the new metal rods to the boards?

  9. 27613James on March 4, 2023 at 2:12 am

Try using solid 8mm carbon fiber rod, find it on ebay, they use it for arrows.
Will not harm the barrels, similar to what Tipton uses for their carbon fiber cleaning rods.

Nice project. I like it! Do you think it is safe on the barrels over long term use?

  11. certified30 on March 4, 2023 at 2:12 am

    use heat shrinks..

  12. Ronnie Carson on March 4, 2023 at 2:13 am

Have you considered using truck bed liner on the metal dows?

  13. Peter Minafo on March 4, 2023 at 2:13 am

    use hose on the rods

  14. David M. on March 4, 2023 at 2:13 am

Like the design, but a much simpler solution is electrical heat shrink wrap over the steel. It doesnt peel or come off like the liquid rubber, and cheaper too.

  15. cheitner on March 4, 2023 at 2:19 am

Shrink wrap heated and a rubber cap

  16. Gun Enthusiast on March 4, 2023 at 2:19 am

Pretty cool functional DIY pistol rack….Good job…

  18. Chris Rogers on March 4, 2023 at 2:24 am

Maybe add some shrink tube over your dowels for barrel protection.

  19. Lazerrus Laslonin on March 4, 2023 at 2:26 am

just put heat shrink tubing on your rods

  20. Cyclone Gunworks on March 4, 2023 at 2:27 am

Best rods to use: easy to cut, super strong, zero friction damage and they hold 22lr to 50cal. Enough to make 15 to 20 rods:

Nice design….might want to take a look at the clear acrylic rods..might be a bit easier on your barrels..

  22. Cmax Arms on March 4, 2023 at 2:30 am

Very cool, you need to make a bunch of them and do a GAW!

  23. Carl Chapman on March 4, 2023 at 2:31 am

It would be really helpful to have dimensions, materials list, suppliers, connections methods, etc. for these kind of projects.

  24. Robert Bluni on March 4, 2023 at 2:42 am

Or you could try using shrink wrap that electricians use, or plastic bolts shaved down. Just some alternative ideas.

  25. Orion Fixr on March 4, 2023 at 2:44 am

Brass or aluminum is even cheaper. Good job!

  26. Big Johnson Guns and Gear on March 4, 2023 at 2:45 am

Looks good brother! Put the old school carb rubber vacuum hose over the metal rods, you can get different inside dia hose at any auto parts store. Carry On!

  27. Hendrik Moolman on March 4, 2023 at 2:45 am

Great idees. I will try putting heat shrink on the metal rods

  28. Little Jenny on March 4, 2023 at 2:45 am

    Cool DIY

  29. Dave Engstrom on March 4, 2023 at 2:48 am

Wrap the rods with electrical tape.

  30. fatefinger on March 4, 2023 at 2:48 am

The wooden dowel will sag but will not snap. If it’s going to snap it will when you put it on. Not sure if it will deform over time.

  31. russ elder on March 4, 2023 at 2:51 am

nice———I could use one if you ever get into sales. Really a good idea

  32. Milestone Profile on March 4, 2023 at 2:52 am

Im telling you. Awesome design pal. Only thing missing is protection for barrel rifling. You can accomplish that with electrical shrink wrap. Cheers

  33. locoray on March 4, 2023 at 2:58 am

Great idea, I have the one thats foam that just holds em; plus a lot of good suggestions in the comments.

  34. Gregory Kalush on March 4, 2023 at 2:58 am

Nice idea. Hey why not try using shrink wrap on the steel rods. It would protect your barrels and won’t scrape off like Plastidip. Just my 2 cents!

  35. Milestone Profile on March 4, 2023 at 2:59 am

Try some shrink wrap that they use for wires. Should be durable
