Far From Understated: A Conversation About Wacky Watches | After Hours

Far From Understated: A Conversation About Wacky Watches | After Hours

For collectors seeking something mechanically and aesthetically elaborate and uninhibited, the watches explored in this edition of WatchBox After Hours make quite an impression. Join Armand Johnston, C’Q Gottlieb, and Alex Lazarus for a conversation about watches that embody individuality, artistry, and cutting-edge watchmaking techniques.

The models discussed here are a showcase for creativity. First up is the Hublot Big Bang Broderie Sugar Skull with a yellow sapphire-set case and electric yellow threads embroidered in a skull motif on the dial and intricately along the strap. Next is the Graff Star Grande Date Limited Edition, constructed with a distinguished blue ceramic faceted case and striking blue dial. The guys admire the unusual faceted crystal case back and draw attention to the micro-adjustment feature of the deployant buckle, reinforcing how watch collecting and admiration is truly the sum of many, many details.

A one-of-one, piece unique from Manufacture Contemporaine du Temps is up next, designed with a black PVD-coated white gold case. The MCT Sequential Two American Eagle Limited Edition employs a unique system of rotating prisms and a jumping C-shape arc to display the time – it is definitely worth watching our hands-on review for a closer look. Armand characterizes the next watch as a ‘really cool lesson in fluid dynamics in timekeeping’ – the HYT H1. Traditionally, fluid is the enemy of a mechanical timepiece, but the main design feature of this model is a fluid-powered retrograde hour display around the periphery of the dial.

The final piece on the table is whimsical, wacky, and mechanically complex – the Bell & Ross BR-01 Laughing Skull. It features bold proportions, a “Clous de Paris” pattern engraved in the case, and an automaton found on the skull head. As you wind the watch, the skull’s mouth moves up and down, as if it is laughing at you…

Which of these far-from-understated pieces do you admire the most? Do you have any ‘wacky’ watches in your personal collection?

The most eye-catching “wacky” watch here is that pink/red/coral? Thing Armand is wearing! What is that by the way…a Swatch?

Why do you guys don’t wear a mask, while Watchbox royalty, Tim and Brian, do?

All the watches are unique yet what I enjoy the most is the low key atmosphere which is really refreshing. Thank you gentlemen and keep them coming. 👍

Hublot – outlandishly not good. Only a mother can like. But it is a conversation piece

Cool topic, and good conversation. As much as I dislike the wrist check…I gotta ask, what watches are CQ and Zach Galifianakis wearing? Nice Seiko Armand! Thanks for the content.

A niche, wrapped in a niche inside a niche.
But at least you know the guy wearing this watch bought it for the watch. There’s honesty in that.

You can say what you want about hublot but you cant say they havent been pushing the envelope with the materials they use

Bell and Ross tourbillons….they flew (regarding inventory). Now that’s what I call a flying tourbillon.

Christopher Claret also quite wacky isn’t it? Especially the X-trem watch. And Montblanc metamorphosis as well is quite wacky. And genta Disney, and the jaquemart watches in general I guess?

Graff is nice, the rest is repulsive.

@04:31 This is a very weird image…It looks like a layer of dust and maybe some finger prints are on the hands of this watch? The Power Reserve @04:39 looks really off too. Is just a trick of the light (watches being hard to photograph)? Or are the hands of this watch made of some material that just looks weird from a certain angle?

You can’t get this type of content anywhere else on Youtube. Hate it or love it, at least I know these watches exist now.

Could you imagine the negativity if Invicta made a watch like that Hublot Embroidery?

  27. DPL 26 on October 18, 2022 at 9:58 pm

They made a Trump watch 🇺🇸
