One possible explanation in the Rocket Launcher’s case is that the reason it has recoil is because it can’t backblast. The reload mechanism and magazine are located in the back of the gun, so you can’t vent the rocket’s thruster through it. That means that you are absorbing the force of the rocket firing off, which with real rockets would knock you off your feet, and even give the Doom slayer some heavy recoil. Perhaps this is also the reason for the relatively slow rockets: the necessity of lowered recoil means that the thrusters can’t be as powerful.

Oh dear. Describing the shotgun as the "second-worst weapon in the game." He’s gonna need every last one of those guns behind him if word of such blasphemy gets out. 🙂

break down custer’s revenge. What was the basis for that?

  5. Daniel Carrier on September 19, 2022 at 8:19 pm

I’m guessing the pistol is some kind of chemical laser. Are there solid-state chemical lasers? If so, you could use that once and then eject it much like a bullet.

  6. Julian Brien on September 19, 2022 at 8:20 pm

How does a shotgun shell vary from say a 7.62 or even a 9mm?
COULD it be possible of using the slam fire of the homemade shotgun but as for a rifle or pistol (handgun?) cartridge?

  7. Leonard Fries on September 19, 2022 at 8:20 pm

It’s such a shame that John didn’t comment on the Gauss Cannon.

  8. itchykami on September 19, 2022 at 8:23 pm

Doom started its own thing, and it’s like it’s slowly incorporating its own version of warhammer.

This was really neat! I’d love to see you look at guns from lesser known titles, too! There were some pretty interesting guns from the Turok series, for instance. (Yes, including the remake)

For the pistol, the reason it has casings is there are physical bullets, explained to be a kind of volatile gel that releases large amounts of energy. The gun turns the EMG Cartridge (Energy Matter Gel) to energy and ejects the cartridge

  28. Terry Gill on September 19, 2022 at 8:47 pm

Interesting tidbit regarding the Micro Missiles – there’s been several attempt at developing "smart" grenade launcher that do that exact thing of exploding above cover, etc. Look up the XM25 smart launching system.

  29. David Rahl on September 19, 2022 at 8:48 pm

Oddly enough, if the pump shotgun muzzle is the underbarrel, that would just about put the shotgun muzzle back in-line with the dropped buttstock… 🤔

  30. Shaun wilson on September 19, 2022 at 8:48 pm

So is there a Warhammer bolter vid ?

  40. Obsidian Prime on September 19, 2022 at 9:04 pm

The Doom Eternal chaingun is basically a rapid fire gauss gun. Given the aesthetic similarities to the pistol from 2016, I’d say that’s why you have cartridges.
The BFG has a lot going for it besides the giant breach, slow motion is recommended.

Also was skipping a couple of the guns secondary functions on purpose?

  41. Brendan Robertson on September 19, 2022 at 9:05 pm

The Hammer’s Slammers series uses powerguns, and the author specifically designed it to still require a cartridge to hold the energy (some armies use lasers with powerpacks with the corresponding weight issues)

  42. Timothy Tucker on September 19, 2022 at 9:05 pm

For the bfg 10,000 the giant gun part was a way of "building up the power" of the bfg 9000 which the doom slayer ripped out of the 10,000

  43. Gregtronica on September 19, 2022 at 9:08 pm

the one we have all been waiting for

  44. Chiel Voswijk on September 19, 2022 at 9:08 pm

Entertaining watch. Taking a few critical jabs, but never ignoring that the main intention behind them is to look cool or as he describes it "The gun equivalent of a Conan sword"
And yes. Very wise editing to include the reaction to the BFG10000’s firing sequence. It is the funniest bit in game!

Also never realized the original dooms did indeed lack a traditional assault rife. it was straight to chainguns back then.

What an amazing collection of historic and futuristic weaponry! Who better than Jonathan to help us to understand and appreciate these devices of epic conflict. I’m not seeing one of my favorites in your collection. The Dreyse model 1910/15 in 7.92×57 Mauser. Rare, I know, as most were butchered to become the MG15. DO YOU HAVE ONE TO SHOW OFF?
