From the Vault: Rigby Mauser Rifle

Brownells Gun Techs Caleb Savant and Steve Ostrem found this “gunsmith’s dream gun” at Rock Island Auction Co.: a custom Mauser bolt action rifle built in 2002 by John Rigby & Co. for Safari Club International. It’s chambered in .500 Jeffery, which was developed in the 1920s as a cartridge that would pack a punch similar to the .505 Gibbs or .416 Rigby, yet still fit in a standard Mauser 98 action. The Rock Island / Safari Club Rigby is a trim, compact, easy-to-carry rifle that still enables you to take on the Big Five of African game. And it’s a masterpiece of the gunmaker’s art! Practical features include a square-bridge receiver with integral scope mounts, low-ride safety, three-leaf express rear sight, front sight with flip-down hood, and a leatherbound recoil pad to help soak up that .500 Jeffery kick. The immaculate ornamentation is suitably British – tasteful and not overdone. The stock is cut from beautifully figured wood with perfectly executed wrap-around checking on the forearm. There’s plenty of exquisite engraving on the metal with just enough inlaid gold to add highlights AND emphasize that this is not your ordinary “fac-tree” bolt rifle. It passes muster even with Caleb, who will not be fooled by a half-a–…. half-way job on engraving and checkering. A superb example of the classic British gunmaker’s art.

Looks like a California made Reimer Johannsen action. 2002 is a California year.

I have always had a thing for English safari rifles. Especially doubles. Read to much Capstick and Corbett as a kid. There is a wonderful video on Holland and Holland’s YouTube channel showing the process. It’s quite a long video set to music. I would highly recommend if this type of gun interest you.

Wow! Beautiful! Those British safari rifles are pure class. Buying one is on my bucket list along with a trip Africa to tangle with the Cape Buffalo.

Seeing both of you mark out for this rifle is awesome. When the hosts of the videos are just as amazed as the viewers you know you have something special. Safari guns are god level.

What is the estimated cost to such a work of art? What other cartridge can the power of this be compared too?

How do I rechamber a 30-06 Mossberg for 6.5×55 Swedish?
I saw Brownells had a short Mauser action barrel in 6.5×55 but I don’t know if it has the same thread pitch as my rifle.

Gentlemen I enjoy seeing a NICE CUSTOM MAUSER. Maybe you can HELP me with figuring out what I have in way of a old custom Mauser. It has a KRUPP STEEL BARREL. It’s hexagon shape where it attaches to the receiver and a raised rib that runs the lenght of barrel. It has the twin set triggers, spoon bolt handle. The serial numbers on on the barrel match the receiver, bolt, gas shield, magazine well and trigger assembly. On the underside of the receiver there is marked a CROWN over a N making it pre war? There was a smaller CROWN beside the CROWN N. UNFORTUNATELY the stock is modern day. NICE stock BUT IMPROPER. PLEASE GENTLEMEN CAN YOU HELP ME.
