Nikon Prostaff vs Vortex Crossfire II: 3-9×40 Scope Showdown

Nikon Prostaff vs Vortex Crossfire II: 3-9×40 Scope Showdown

I had great results with both of these optics, and I expect great long term performance from them. If I could only have one, I’d be hard pressed to say which it would be.

Nikon turrets are easier to reset to 0 (just pull out, adjust and press down) than the Vortex, which requires a screwdriver to set the turret to 0.

I just bought a Vortex crossfire II 3x9x40 to put on my new CZ 457 AT-ONE. I needed something inexpensive to get started and with the Vortex warranty and reputation I chose it. Let me tell you, its hot garbage. The turrets are super mushy and almost cant hear the clicks and forget about feeling the clicks. Under the top turret cover it says "BAD"… What the heck does that mean lol There is no parallax adjustment and at 50 yards the clarity is poop. I have 20/15 vision so it isnt me. I have the crosshairs looking nice and crisp but a 1 inch sticker at 50 yards on 9 power is blurry. Its a orange sticker with crosshairs and black diamond bullseye and all I can see is a orange circle. I have a $50 Walmart scope that looks better and has parallax adjustments from 25-100. The elevation turret is mush but it does click alot better than the windage turret. The windage turret will click at normal intervals and then seems like it misses 3 or 4 before it clicks again….. Its just poop I tell you. Vortex may make some nice stuff but this Crossfire is poop. My crossfire red dot is also poop. Granted both my red dot and this scope are their entry level but my holosun red dot for instance is about the same price as the Crossfire red dot and the dot looks like a clear dot on the holosun and on the vortex its…. An asterisk lol looks like this *…… Sorry vortex. Poop on you.

I actually had a crossfire 2. It was okay. But it ultimately got bent in a soft padded rifle bag. Probably wonโ€™t buy again. But it has a good warranty. So I sold it off with the R700 I had that was also a total pos.

What with the scope without dots; what is the distance in the center part to be able to make use of it as a method of working out distance.

    Excellent thank you ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  7. Miguel Zepeda on November 19, 2022 at 9:35 pm

I own vortex crossfire 2(3-9ร—40) as well as a Nikon prostaff with the same magnification. Definitely Nikon for me, better clarity when magnified on the 9 as well as the quality. My vortex tends to fog up on me on cold weather. Bought it new too, the Nikon I bought used.

My Nikon oring did same thing after 2 years. Sent it back to Nikon and they could or would not fix it. Iโ€™m trying to get a refund now. Nikon no longer makes scopes. Iโ€™m looking at the Vortex now. Nikon was mounted on a .556 so donโ€™t think recoil was the factor.

  10. LCJ Jr. on November 19, 2022 at 9:35 pm

Too bad Nikon no longer makes rifle scopes. The Vortex is just as good.

  11. Ed LeDoux on November 19, 2022 at 9:36 pm

Good, helpful information. I could do without all the time wasting montages of you shooting while music plays in the background.

  12. Roy Poulos on November 19, 2022 at 9:37 pm

    Very informative bideo. I like.

  13. mikewd1983 on November 19, 2022 at 9:37 pm

The warranty on the Vortex is amazing! But, I never have owned a Nikon so I can not say much about the warranty…

  14. Caleb Witt on November 19, 2022 at 9:37 pm

I was told by a gun salesman that Nikon quit selling scopes. Too bad because I thought for the money they were very good. Did Sig Sauer get the technology for the Buckmasters scopes?

  15. Jeffrey Morgan on November 19, 2022 at 9:38 pm

I put the Vortex on my Ruger mini 14 Target. Perfect for up to 300 yards

  16. Rob Kholar on November 19, 2022 at 9:38 pm

O-my!! the O-ring coming off is a big turn off from the Nikon. Regardless a clearer scope picture is one of its highest virtues.

Hey, I like your Channel! Like the presentation and especially the evaluation… it seems you have a real knack for great gear selection and use! Thanks for sharing! Oh… I do like the scope mount on the Nikon better… never been a fan of the quick connect/release mounts…

  22. Dallan C. on November 19, 2022 at 9:43 pm

After Nikon changed their warranty, who would ever buy one of their scopes?

  23. kike amaro on November 19, 2022 at 9:43 pm

Picked up the Nikon for 50 bucks at academy yesterday!

  24. Robert Walsh on November 19, 2022 at 9:44 pm

The main thing that would really be helpful here is to compare how they each perform after 5000 rounds. You could actually just skip the Nikon (I know it can handle 5K 30-06) and run 5K though the pellet gun scope and tell us how badly it got shaken up.

  25. Beef Rockmore on November 19, 2022 at 9:45 pm

Dang that whole shoot look around thing didn’t age well at all.

  26. Bob Mederos on November 19, 2022 at 9:45 pm

Nikon stop making rifle and shotgun scopes in 2019. I just send in My shotgun scope, slug hunter 3 x 9 x 40 BDC 200 for repair or replacement. I still have not heard from them, will follow up on their lifetime warranty.

  27. dalan wanbdiska on November 19, 2022 at 9:48 pm

I have a 3x9x40 nikon prostaff scope on my semi auto 270 win. It works perfect on low and high zoom. Got me a moose with the combo of the nikon prostaff scope and browning bar mk1 270 winchester. Moose was at 100 yards and 1 shot in the chest and 1 shot through the heart . Lots of good meat.

  30. Kohn Futner on November 19, 2022 at 9:52 pm

Good deal on the Nikon prostaff right now at academy sports.

  31. G Ant on November 19, 2022 at 9:55 pm

At least vortex has a lifetime warranty if you break it they replace it no questions asked nikon cant say the same

  32. VON OZ Blitz-k on November 19, 2022 at 9:56 pm

All these fancy moves while shooting your AR I wonder how you would do that if you’ve got two or three people shooting at you would you still be doing all the funny moves or would you just be running for cover

  33. Pepper Perez on November 19, 2022 at 9:56 pm

3-9 scopes go on rifles get a 2-7 for ars

  34. Ben Burrowes on November 19, 2022 at 10:00 pm

I have a Nikon prostaff clearer glass than the Leupold vari-x2

  37. Jon doe on November 19, 2022 at 10:01 pm

Damn shame they stopped producing the Nikon

  38. rick klose on November 19, 2022 at 10:01 pm

For others looking at scopes – As of January 27, 2021: On Amazon the Vortex is $149 and the Nikon is $289 – Big difference when Amazon also has the Leupold VX Freedom 3-9×40 for $265. The Vortex and Leupold both have a lifetime warranty – couldn’t find any warranty info for the Nikon.

  39. Thomas Commons on November 19, 2022 at 10:07 pm

Have 3 vortex scopes very happy with them. Bent the windage turrent on one. Called Vortex then sent it to them .It was returned in a couple of weeks good as new.

  40. One Headlight on November 19, 2022 at 10:09 pm

Can’t send it back to Nikon anymore ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. Ben on November 19, 2022 at 10:14 pm

The biggest question ever for a scope is, โ€œ do I have confidence in and trust this scope?โ€

  42. Kohn Futner on November 19, 2022 at 10:14 pm

Seems like the eye relief on both aren’t very good. I think the vortex is worse in that regard.

  43. Gugi Graubvogel on November 19, 2022 at 10:16 pm

This dude works for Nikon? Vortex is better scope than Nikon. I have a Nikon 3-9×40 and a Vortex 4-12×50. Vortex is a better build, solid, waterproof, and lifetime warranty. Nobody beat that.

  44. Sindee Charlton on November 19, 2022 at 10:17 pm

my problem is Nikon is not in scopes any longer, so life time warranty might no be there either

  45. Me Ter on November 19, 2022 at 10:17 pm

Nikons been making scopes since the 70s idk but vortex is a new company making Chinese scopes.

  46. Kool Breeze on November 19, 2022 at 10:17 pm

Those left to right theatrics are insane

  47. Cris Jr on November 19, 2022 at 10:19 pm

So he drops the vortex and it was fine. Didnโ€™t drop the Nikon and had to return for poor build quality. Also this comparison is a little of top of the line Nikon vs a mid grade vortex. Vortex all day.

  48. Brett Gallagher on November 19, 2022 at 10:23 pm

Have both…. The Vortex came on a gun/scope combo. Nikon is my choice!

  49. Clem Nichols on November 19, 2022 at 10:26 pm

You failed to point out that the Vortex has variable parallax whereas the Nikon does not.

  50. Bo Bodkin on November 19, 2022 at 10:27 pm

WTF are you doing at 1:58 ? My god, to be lost in this person’s mind…..
