Proposed gun-control bill has South Africa up in arms | DW News

South Africans are divided over a proposed law that aims to cut the number of guns in circulation. The amended Firearms Control Act will ban people from getting a gun license for self-defense. Critics say the law is impractical and threatens peoples safety. But supporters say it could stop gun violence. There are 450,000 licensed fire-arms in South Africa, and 6 out 10 of them are held for self-defense purposes. DW’s Christine Mhundwa reports from Johannesburg.

Disarming lawful people to protect them from criminals with guns seems to be the stupidest thing ever conceived.

  2. knnytitus on November 21, 2022 at 9:37 pm

trust me look at astrialia dont let them take your guns

  3. Gas The Left on November 21, 2022 at 9:37 pm

South Africa is crawling with criminals and rape gangs. Makes sense the international Satanists want to disarm law abiding citizens eyeroll

  4. Full name on November 21, 2022 at 9:38 pm

The South African police are too inept, underpaid and undertrained to enforce this. They couldn’t deal with the Waco-esque situations that would arise from this.

  5. Apocreation FPV on November 21, 2022 at 9:39 pm

Please, tell WHEN have a single law EVER stopped a criminal? Its only more restrictive on citizens, that is where it ends. Prove me wrong.

  6. Wazy on November 21, 2022 at 9:40 pm

This is B.S. any law abiding citizen, home owner, family man or woman should have the right to defend themselves, their loved ones and their property. People must wake up and realize that things are only getting easier for criminals.

  7. 1911GreaterThanALL on November 21, 2022 at 9:41 pm

If guns are so dangerous how are they not affective for stopping someone for self defense?

  8. Damzu on November 21, 2022 at 9:42 pm

Gun CONTROL is about CONTROL! One gun can control 100 unarmed people but 100 armed citizens can control that 1 criminal… the so called law always favour the Criminals because the Country’s Government and Police are the biggest Gangs and Criminals to begin with…

Proud to live in the freedom state of Montana, where firearms are not registered, open and concealed carry are legal, with the highest firearm ownership in the US per capita. If the anti gun people were even partially correct, there should be no one alive here. Instead we have few murders by firearms, a low violent crime issue, and more and more women empowering themselves. When seconds count, police are many minutes away.

  11. A Person on November 21, 2022 at 9:45 pm

Now you will begin to see death by knife, sword and machetes. Its the same in all countries with ‘gun’ control measures. I don’t own a gun, but to say gun ownership is bad, is just completely short-sighted and trying to solve the problem by coercion and not rationalizing its potential ramifications.

Love the part where they forget to mention the thousands of confiscated guns the police admitted to selling to the criminals after the last gun control changes.

  13. Eesti mees on November 21, 2022 at 9:47 pm

South Africans need to stand up to this BS. Getting a gun for self-defense is the most common sense reason to have a weapon and any effort by government to take away this must be met by such pressure that it forces the government to give up and repel this authoritarian law.
Edit: Also this is an awful reporter to have report on this matter. This is like hiring an reporter to cover military matters without having a clue on how militaries work.

Reminds me of the Democrats here in the US. They claimed that guns and walls don’t work. Guess what democrats surrounded themselves with after the Jan 6th attack at the capital? 😂 BTW, I side with the Democrats on most issues.

    It doesn’t matter I don’t need a gun.
If I want to make deadly weapons. Stores like

    -builders warehouse
    -chamberlain
    -dischem

Are my friends, they sell all sorts of things that you can make weapons with

  21. sideshow bob roberts on November 21, 2022 at 9:56 pm

so, in SA actual incidents o’ violence perpetrated by criminals with guns inspires private citizens to – reluctantly – purchase guns. in america however just the perceived threat – even if based on wholly unfounded conspiracies – is enough to spur an orgy o’ gun sales, making us the most heavily-armed (and consequently, dangerous) nation in the solar system…

  22. Leothelion on November 21, 2022 at 9:56 pm

I was a Ballistic investigator working IBIS with 1000s of exibit firearms. 80% were unlicensed and a high percentage homemade. Where is the logic, definately not in stastistics.

  29. Stefän Grun on November 21, 2022 at 10:06 pm

Idk where tf you guys get your info, but you obviously do 0 research. We have around 3 million licensed firearms, not 450,000.

Also, there are no statistics available for how many licenses are for self-defense, sport, or hunting.

  30. Nate on November 21, 2022 at 10:06 pm

What idiocy… same garbage they try here in the US. I bet South Africans will roll over and take it though – every other place where this is tried other than the US just caves and bows to their government owners.

  32. D C on November 21, 2022 at 10:09 pm

Adele Kirsten of Gun Free SA: Gun laws mainly only affect the law abiding responsible majority. Criminals generally do not care about the law. If law abiding responsible citizens do not have guns as an effective means of self-defense, it takes away the fear and doubt from criminals. Gun problems are not gun problems. It is because of problems with individuals.

  33. kibicz on November 21, 2022 at 10:11 pm

Absolutely too class journalism. Never fired a firearm but doing so in order to deliver an unbiased report. To the survivor of the attack, I take my hat off to you for taking steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. You’re one courageous lady. Great comments from those brave security guys. They’re legends and heroes.

How about mandatory life in prison for rape and gun crime?

  50. Zabadack on November 21, 2022 at 10:29 pm

The whole idea is simply that criminals only will have guns as these groups are connected to the police and politicians.
If they take my gun, I’ll obtain an illegal gun.
