Renegade .54 Caliber Black Powder Rifle by Thompson Center

Renegade .54 Caliber Black Powder Rifle by Thompson Center

Here is a quick look and a couple of shots with the very lovely .54 Renegade black powder rifle from Thompson Center.

If you love traditional looking black powder rifles this is a great modern production option. This gun is HEAVY! That huge octagonal barrel is a joy to shoot and a load to carry.

This video reminds me of the first time I tried to ride a bike as a child and crashed.. Brush up on black powder and redo this… So many made more mistakes than I would ever publish! Geee

For the guy with the Ram Rod stuck in the barrel.  My Dad and I were shooting what were his rifles at the time (he has passed on)  He asked me to help him find his ram rod.  So I am crawling on my hands and knees looking everywhere for it.  Finally he says "Uh, you dont suppose I left it in the barrel……  So we walked down range until we found this still smoking stick.

The hawken is probably the coolest rifle ever

That’s a very nice rifle I own one myself. I replaced the original shallow groove 1-48 twist TC  barrel with a deep groove slow twist Green Mountain ball barrel. Huge improvement for shooting balls. I can load any charge and they are all accurate. Also you newbies watching this video that have hangfires shooting pyrodex and 777 in your caplock, try black powder. No hangfires. Cleaning is mandatory regardless of powder choice. Have fun.

Can you use the powder kegs

  11. Joshua Nesbitt on November 12, 2021 at 10:43 pm

I have the same gun , but mine is 56 cal. Same setup and fun. I shoot 90 grain of triple seven ffg. I would recommend that anyone who use these black powder guns clean them properly after firing. Black powder leaves a mess and causes fouling and can also effect accuracy if left uncleaned for a while and after many shots. Long story short shot it once or 10 times a day just clean it when your done.

    Have this rifle love it

  13. Steven Brown on November 12, 2021 at 10:43 pm

The ‘stick’ is a ram rod 😉

  14. mauserman67 on November 12, 2021 at 10:44 pm

    The "loops"are called ramrod thimbles.

  15. G.M. Jewelry on November 12, 2021 at 10:45 pm

    1. It’s called a ramrod. 2. Not to sound rude but there is no reason for your gloves. Seriously.

  16. Archaeopteryx128 on November 12, 2021 at 10:45 pm

I’ve found better ignition with a musket cap nipple.
Also, real black-powder is less corrosive than perchlorate-based Pyrodex.

  17. tim farley on November 12, 2021 at 10:47 pm

Nothing weird about the ramrod. Just use the other end to load. The threaded end is for cleaning jags, brushes, patch hook ( I think its called that or puller), and ball puller. Its cupped for a reason.

  18. Wireman134 on November 12, 2021 at 10:47 pm

Looks like rifle wasn’t kept to clean. Top flat behind rear sight has some pitting. Black powder is more corrosive. Must clean with hot water. I assembled a .50 T/C Hawken kit back in the late 80’s. Have a 1:66" round ball barrel for it also.

  19. Shawn Wells on November 12, 2021 at 10:48 pm

They’re not primers, rather percussion caps. They haven’t been corrosive for decades.

  20. Jerry Johanan on November 12, 2021 at 10:48 pm

I got one last year and never fired it yet. I’m a left hand and my gun is a left hand lock.

All you may own if u can’t pass NICS

  22. Don Thursby on November 12, 2021 at 10:53 pm

80 grain round ball? What a wuss! Try a 150 gr. Maxi sometime.

  23. toddena on November 12, 2021 at 10:54 pm

I have this model and what screws into the end of the ram rod is a screw to extracted bullets and a swagger

  24. Macaroni Jack on November 12, 2021 at 10:57 pm

The one I had was made of black walnut.

  25. Neil Jonielunas on November 12, 2021 at 10:57 pm

  27. Jack son on November 12, 2021 at 10:59 pm

What are the gloves for? Must be a city guy. Couldn’t watch .

  28. MrOldClunker on November 12, 2021 at 11:04 pm

The Renegade was made to shoot Maxi Ball conical rounds and not patch and ball as the turn is faster than for patch and ball. Built my first Renegade in the early 80’s. They didn’t offer them except in kits.

You can use the other end of the ram rod for round ball without any attachment.

  32. Paul Dodson on November 12, 2021 at 11:11 pm

Hi HobbyJon, I have a TC Renegade 0.50 cal that Dad heired to me when he died and wound up getting drawn for an elk tag in Colorado for their Muzzleloader season.  I have only shot it a total of 7 times (and 3 of those in 2000 with Dad) in 15 years and am very new to Muzzleloading.  I have a ramrod stuck in the barrel and wondered if you could suggest any decent way  of removing it and 2) Generally do you find that Pyrodex RS is the "best" for big game applications?  Thank you for your time and great video.-Paul

  33. Encore Hunter on November 12, 2021 at 11:13 pm

Wow…dipshit has no clue he is using the wrong end of the ramrod to seat the ball. People this ignorant about the firearms they own shouldnt own firearms period.

  34. Thompson Jerry on November 12, 2021 at 11:13 pm

Knows nothing, and does and says it wrong!

  35. Alan Lutz on November 12, 2021 at 11:16 pm

I have never heard a ramrod be called a loading apparatus. Hahaha

  36. Steve Andrews on November 12, 2021 at 11:16 pm

Ramrod !! I’ll leave after " the loading stick" !!

  37. Tracy Dillon on November 12, 2021 at 11:18 pm

You are using your ramrod backwards. The threaded end is for a jag and a brush. The flared end at the front with the semicircular cup is for ramming the ball home on the charge. That’s why it’s called a ramrod.

  38. L Nash on November 12, 2021 at 11:19 pm

    Loading stick!

  39. mauserman67 on November 12, 2021 at 11:23 pm

Modern percussion caps are not corrosive.

  40. Chris Moore on November 12, 2021 at 11:25 pm

I have the same gun but mine is a flintlock.

  41. HondaRidgeline Enduser on November 12, 2021 at 11:26 pm

  42. Archaeopteryx128 on November 12, 2021 at 11:27 pm

A pity that since the S&W takeover all of the traditional muzzle-loading TC rifles have been discontinued.
I do own a Renegade like the one on the vid though, and have shot it, a lot.
