Why My Savage Axis II 30-06 Sucked
Why My Savage Axis II 30-06 Sucked
When I bought the Savage Axis II 30-06 I thought that I had purchased an inexpensive entry level rifle that would still perform well in the field. Boy… was I in for a nasty surprise. Watch this video to find out how I fixed it.

So in your opinion: given the action and the accu trigger, is it worth it to get an axis ll, and change the stock, or just get a better 06 to start with ?
Upgrade to a 110 buddy. Maybe $250 more. But lots better and it has accu stock. I have an axis ii compact 243 for my son and it’s shoots well.
No fun to hear you complain. Bye

Just out of curiosity, why buy a thumb hole stock and then not use the thumb hole?
Sucks ? I Just hit a perfect kill shot on a whitetail from 150 yards offhand. Seems fine to me 👍
I have a question how much room should there be between your scope and your Bolt
I bought two Savage axis with the wood stock .One in 223 and one in 243 . My issue was the Horrible Triggers ! You’d get a cramp in my Fore arm from trying to squeeze the triggers . I bought ne Timney Triggers for both and now they are Amazing rifles ! Can cover a 4 shot group with a dime if I’m really careful and fire a fouling shot before trying to group . I’m thinking if you buy them with the wood stock it eliminates a lot of problems . Just my opinion . Thanks for the video
went to wallymart to get this rifle today. Did not have I.D. with my middle name written out. It is a policy for today. Quite obvious that many Wallymarts are ditching firearm sales completely. Will have middle name tattooed on forehead and signed off on by Mr.Trump. So, I can drive the hour to buy a doodoo peashooter.
I inherited about 450 rounds of 30-06 rounds that are about 10-15 years old and my Remington 721 will cycle the rounds but it’s a 1950s rifle so i don’t want to keep shooting it. So i bought a savage axis and it will not cycle any of my ammunition, the bolt gets jammed every time but when i put brand new ammo through it, it cycles just fine. Ready to return it
Why grip the barrel and stock at the same time. Just hold the front stock.
Same set up but a leopole glass and in 223 its a keeper…
Nice you did a great promo 👍
You won’t be disappointed with the Sig Sauer BDX. Go get the Gen 2. Even better.
I took an aluminum arrow embedded it in to that stock and stiffened it up a cheap fix for a cheap gun
Guess I got lucky, bought two of these 10 years ago, a 30-06 and a 7mm-08 both with plastic camo stocks. First thing I did was replace the scopes and installed timney triggers on both, they are excellent shooters and both have killed deer and elk. The replacement trigger made a significant difference, the factory triggers are as bad as they get on par with the series one weatherby vanguards which are also excellent shooters once you upgrade the trigger.
The bolt has been giving me troubles, after a couple hundred rounds I started getting light primer strikes. Apparently the pin spins and or the 2 piece spring with the tiny washer between shifts sideways and binds the pin. Easy to tinker with but make gun unreliable for hunting. Also the bolt does not lock so when hunting you have to make sure to push the bolt handle down or the trigger will lock.
In my opinion the best axis is the 300 black out
I’ve had no issues with mine other than it has light strikes. I haven’t fixed it yet… other than that the ammo it does shoot have all been under an inch group at 200 yards.
I have a savage axis in 350 legend 18 inch barrel that shoots under an inch at 110 yards. Those boyd stocks are junk they have to have pillars installed and bed the action to stiffen them up. Boyd stocks are cheap replacements for cheap rifles. They are only for looks. Nobody puts a boyd on a serious gun. Theyre made for walmart hunting rifles.
I viewed mine as a project gun like you did and mine shoots 1/2" with handloads. Mine was worth it also. I like the stainless actions.
Its not the rifle, its the person.
I put mine in a oryx chassis and it doesn’t amazing now
Subscribed, share on Facebook too. Great videos! I’m not there when your shooting, if your not yet doing this. After the shot, keep your trigger finger pressed after the shot, then when your target comes back after recoil, then release the trigger. You might all ready be doing this, just trying to help. Instead of buying another stock, try bedding the front loose, and rear tight. Great videos, I’m not a know it all, but know how to make rifles shoot better. Thanks for the uploads. MOLON LABE
I have the savage axis 2 in 308 getting ready to put an ORYX chassis in it
I knew it it was the stock
I came across a wood stocked one earlier this week….Bushnell Banner 3-9×40 with bdc reticle…..took it down to clean and lighten accutrigger and lo and behold the wood stock is a Boyd’s. Hopefully it shoots… $362 out the door.
Is it just me or does this guy have a great talking voice? I just like hearing him talk.
Great channel. Just got a S. A. 30-06 w/ 6# trigger, weaver 3-9 scope. 1” group @ 100 yds. Probably got lucky. Can’t wait to put some more rounds through it.
Dang dude I hate when you get a bad one out of a pack I have the savage axis 1 3006 and 243 and both synthetic stock and factory loads are 1/2 groups at 100 yards or a bit more sometimes
"silk purse out of a sow’s ear" HAHAHAHA.
This company gave me a stock this company gave me optics – hmmm
I look at the savage rifles as builder rifles..theres a reason the stocks are cheap…lol..i sunk mine into an mdt chassis..aluminum.. Swapped the barrel to a heavy barrel with a precision armament muzzle brake..and still waiting on the arken 4-16x 50 scope…
Yea..its gotten really pricey w the upgrades..but i also tune my air rifles ..seeking that repeatable accuracy….if you’re a hunter..wood stock and done…me….med-lr targets
Its all good! Enjoy yiur hobby no matter how cheap or pricey you choose..
Great vid!
That’s why I bought the Savage Axis II XP Hardwood .
I had a lot of the same issues as you, ended up taking the barrel off and sanding down the points of contact where my grip affected it. Threw loctight on every bolt, and it shoots like a dream.
I’ve also been shooting federal non-typical 180 gr, it may not be as good as a match round, but its consistent enough out to 300 and 400 yards, more than I’ll ever need in a hunting scenario. Moreover I found it for 23$ cad a box so it’s a good way to break the gun in and still get good groups.
Great as a salesman and name dropper. Bet you’ve even polished your “radio voice” over the years you’ve been schilling for whomever would throw a dollar at you, huh? Other than that? Blah, blah, blah, blah, time to change the channel. Boring.
How is the bolt slop. Mine has a lot of slop when bolt is fully open
Joel, I have Savage Axis rifles with a gen 1 polymer stock, a gen 2 polymer stock and the hardwood stock. All give me 1 moa accuracy. The more I shoot them the more accurate they get.
So why is there a complete 180 on the axis 2 just a few months later? First review says you love it. Second video title says it sucks? Getting some kickbacks for selling stocks or? Asking for a friend.
This guy must squeeze the vaaJesus out that barrel when he bench shoots hahaha
I bought Savage 16FCSS Weather Warrior rifles in 223 Remington and 338 Federal, which both have Accustocks and Accutriggers. I also bought Savage 110 Hunter rifles in 243 Winchester and 280 Ackley Improved, which both have Accufit Accustocks and Accutriggers. Neither rifle i bought was over $500 brand new although they retail over $900! I topped them all with DNZ Hunter Master (Game Reaper 2) low height integrated scope rings and mount with Leupold 3-9x40mm scopes. These rifles have excellent accuracy and need nothing extra, but of course i reload my own ammunition. You get what you pay for in firearms and optics.
To be honest you have a sample of 1. I have at least 4 Savage Axis Rifles and the stock is an issue on some but not others. I have a .308 win that is giving me problems on group size even with a Boyd’s stock upgrade. They do make a heavy barrel model that is better with a Kryptic camo stock and a better scope. They have steel pillars in the stock and they can be a problem if not torqued correctly or even installed where they don’t make good contact. One can always rasp the inside channel of the plastic stock for more clearance if they have the problem you had or even reinforce it with epoxy. What I am saying is that all the plastic stocks are not bad and going to decrease accuracy. All but one of my 4 rifles shoot great groups with the original stock and the one that did not shoot all that well I replaced with the Boyd’s stock still does not group to suit me, still a work in progress. It will shoot well enough to get a deer, but we all want tighter groups if we can get them.
How do you order a stock it doesn’t say 30/06 on the list
My savage axis 30-06 is excellent
The current ERGO stock is stiffer in both the forend and wrist than the original.
So this begs the question: is your upgraded stock version comparable/better/worse than rifles within the cost range of your upgraded version ($600-900?)?
You bought the SUPER cheap Savage rifle, so you really cannot complain at all in what you got. For less than another 100 you could have gotten the still VERY cheap Savage 11 in 30-06 and you would have had exactly what you are asking for (still at a price less than the Ruger American). The problem isn’t with Savage, it’s that you didn’t know which rifle to buy that would fulfil what you wanted most. I also bought a Savage Axis II and because I’m left handed and wanted a hardwood stock (which Savage does not offer in LH models) I knew I’d be tossing the stock and buying a Boyds from the beginning. But then for $575 (not counting scope) I had a very nice wood-stocked hunting rifle, which is a LOT less than I paid for my Remington 700 CDL; still an awesome deal. Generally speaking, Savage offerings are still the best out there for the price if you do the research to know what you’re buying first.
If Savage would just upgrade the stock and get rid of the optics, they would have a great starter rifle.
Does the axis 2 have the aluminum bedding block in the stock that the hunter tactical has?
So you’re bitching because you bought a bare bones, basic entry level rifle, at around $350, and it didn’t deliver Remington 700 BDL performance?
